Electoral system 1989

Out of the 460 seats in the Sejm, 264 were guaranteed to candidates belonging to the national list Patriotic Movement for National Rebirth (Patriotyczny Ruch Odrodzenia Narodowego, PRON) led by PZPR.

35 single-member constituency seats were also guaranteed to candidates belonging to member parties of PRON, but with a 50 % threshold in two rounds.

The remaining 161 single-member constituencies were available to any candidate in a two-round system.

Results

Out of the 35 single-member constituency seats guaranteed to candidates belonging to PRON, two candidates won seats in the first round, whereas 33 candidates won their seats in the second round, where the turnout were 25%.

Out of the 161 single-member seats, 160 seats were won by candidates supported by the Solidarity Citizens’ Committee in the first round, whereas one seat were won by a candidate supported by the Solidarity Citizens’ Committee in the second round.

The percentages in the table above are calculated from the share of votes to candidates of the first round of the 161 freely contested seats.
